SEEKCommons, 7-8 December, 2024, UC Berkeley

Yesterday, I attended the second convening of SEEKCommons, a National Science Foundation funded network that is bringing together researchers, tech designers and activists. I was invited to present a “provocation” from our ongoing community-focused work on the entre—ríos | RÍO BOGOTÁ project in Colombia.

It was an incredible opportunity to get intensive feedback from a range of expert consultants on how to support transitions to a care- and commons-oriented water culture in this polluted watershed. It was also productive to check in on the CARE and FAIR principles for digital design and maintenance.

A collaboration between the University of Notre Dame, University of Michigan, University of California Davis, University of Virginia, and the HDF Group, the “Socio-Environmental Knowledge Commons” (SEEKCommons) project seeks to respond to a series of questions by promoting the “commons” in science and technology with an emphasis on collaborative socio-environmental research:

How can Open Science (OS) contribute to the present and future of socio-environmental research? Why is this question worth pursuing through a distributed network of STS researchers, OS practitioners, and socio-environmental researchers working with climate-impacted communities?

There is also a fellowship call open right now that I recommend checking out: https://seekcommons.org/fellows.html

Thanks to colleague Luis Felipe Murillo for the invitation! To find out more, check out their website: https://seekcommons.org//
